Removing
- To remove the timing belt, perform the following steps in sequence.
- Disconnect the wire from the negative battery terminal.
- Turn out bolts and remove a basic arm of the engine.
- Release tension and remove implement drive belts.
- Remove the crankshaft pulley.
- Turn out bolts and remove a pulley of the water pump.
- Loosen the bolts and remove the power steering pump along with the attached hose and bracket.
Note. Use cord or soft wire to secure the removed power steering pump to the engine compartment so that it does not interfere with the removal of the toothed belt.
- Turn the crankshaft clockwise until the alignment marks on the camshaft and crankshaft pulleys align with the corresponding marks, while the piston of the 1st cylinder will be set to TDC on the compression stroke (pic. 3.38).
Pic. 3.38. Alignment of the alignment marks on the pulleys of the camshaft and crankshaft with the corresponding marks
- Loosen the adjusting bolt of the timing belt tensioner.
- Move the toothed belt tensioner towards the water pump and temporarily tighten the adjusting bolt so that the tensioner does not turn (pic. 3.39).
- Remove the timing belt drive timing.

Warning. If the timing belt is reused, chalk on the reverse (not working) the surface of the belt an arrow indicating the direction of rotation of the belt (clockwise).
Examination
See the corresponding description in the section «4G93 petrol engines».
Installation
- Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following.
- Position the protrusion of the toothed belt tensioner at the end of the tensioner spring (A) as shown in figure 3.40.
Pic. 3.40. Installing the toothed belt tensioner spring
- Move the toothed belt tensioner towards the water pump and temporarily tighten the adjusting bolt.
- Insert screwdriver (WITH) and click on the ledge (IN) tension mechanism springs in the direction shown in Figure 3.40, and install the spring on the stopper (D) oil pump.
- Align the alignment marks on the crankshaft and camshaft pulleys with the corresponding fixed marks.
- Install the timing belt in the following order, making sure that the working branch of the belt is tensioned:
- crankshaft pulley;
- camshaft pulley;
- a pulley of the tension mechanism.

Warning. After installing the timing belt, try to force the camshaft pulley to turn in the opposite direction and then check the belt tension and match the alignment marks.
- Loosen the timing belt tensioner bolt by backing it out 1/2-1/4 turn and allow the tensioner spring to tension the timing belt (pic. 3.42).
Pic. 3.42. Toothed belt tension adjustment
- Rotate the crankshaft two turns clockwise and check that the alignment marks on the camshaft and crankshaft pulleys are aligned with the fixed marks.
Warning. Since the purpose of this operation is to ensure the required tension of the timing belt due to the forces created by the camshaft cams, the rotation of the crankshaft in the opposite direction is not allowed.
- After checking, make sure that the toothed belt teeth are correctly aligned with the notches of the camshaft pulley in the section (A), shown in Figure 3.43.

- Install the power steering pump with attached hose and bracket.
- Install the water pump pulley.
- Install the crankshaft pulley.
- Install attachment drive belts and adjust tension.
- Install the engine support bracket.
- Connect the wire to the negative battery terminal.
