Removing
- Set the front wheels to straight ahead and remove the key from the ignition switch.
- On the back of the steering wheel, remove the two screws securing the airbag (pic. 19.112). Do not remove the screws from the holders.

- Loosen the steering wheel nut. Apply alignment marks to the end of the steering shaft and the steering wheel and remove the steering wheel with a puller.
- Turn out screws and remove the top and lower casings of a steering column.
- Disconnect the electrical connectors from the multifunction switch. Turn out three bolts and remove the multipurpose switch.
- In the reverse order shown in Figure 19.114, remove the screws securing the spiral wire.

Examination
- Check the airbag cover for dents, cracks or deformation.
- Check the connectors for damage and the connector pins for deformation.
Spiral wire test
- If any defect is found, replace the coiled wire
- Check the electrical connectors and the protective tube for damage and oxidation of the connector pins.
- Check continuity between pin 3 of connector 1 of the coiled wire and connector 2 (pic. 19.115).

- Check continuity between pins 22 and 23 of special tool MB991613 and connector #5.
Installation
- Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following.
- Align the alignment marks of the spiral wire in the middle position, for which, after turning the inner sleeve of the spiral wire as far as it will go clockwise, turn it in the opposite direction by 3 and 4/5 turns until the alignment marks are aligned (pic. 19.117).

- After installing the front wheels in the position of rectilinear movement, install the spiral wire in place and secure it with screws, tightening them in the sequence shown in Figure 19.114.
Warning. When installing the steering wheel, make sure the coiled wire harness is not pinched or tangled.
- Before installing the steering wheel, set the front wheels to the straight ahead position and align the alignment marks on the coiled wire.
- Install the steering wheel and driver's airbag. When installing the airbag, connect the coiled wire connector to the module. Verify that the connector is securely connected by checking that the connector latches are engaged. Screw in the airbag mounting screws and tighten them to 9 Nm (pic. 19.118).

- When turning the steering wheel, make sure it turns smoothly and without extraneous noise.
Warning. The SRS security system will not work properly if any element of the system is installed incorrectly.
Check after installation
- Connect the wire to the negative battery terminal.
Warning. To prevent damage to electrical equipment before connecting and disconnecting the MUT-II) turn the key in the ignition switch to the LOCK position.
- Connect the MB991502 device to the diagnostic socket.
- Turn on the ignition.
- Run diagnostics on the SRS security system and make sure it is working properly.
Warning. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal and insulate it, then wait 60 seconds for the capacitor to discharge. Otherwise, the airbag may deploy unintentionally, resulting in injury.
- Switch off the ignition. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal and insulate it.
