Pic. 16.3. Using a special tool to disconnect the tie rod end from the steering knuckle
Warning. Do not completely unscrew the nut securing the ball joint pin of the tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Use a special tool to prevent damage to the threads on the ball joint pin. To prevent falling of the special tool MB991113 or MB990635, fix it with a cord on the front suspension strut.
2. Rock the ball joint pin of the tie rod end several times from side to side. Screw two nuts onto the ball joint pin and measure the torque (pic. 16.4).
Pic. 16.4. Tie Rod End Ball Joint Torque Check
Torque: 9.6 Nm
3. If the torque exceeds the allowable values, replace the tie rod end.
4. If the torque is well below the allowable value, the ball joint can be reused as long as it does not jam or have excessive play.
