Attention. It is necessary to strictly observe the force value of 196 N on the parking brake lever.
2. If the parking brake lever travel is not within specification, adjust it as follows.
(1) To loosen the parking brake cable, loosen the adjusting nut by unscrewing it to the end of the parking brake cable stem.
(2) With the engine idling, firmly depress the brake pedal five or six times. When doing this, make sure that the amount of pedal travel does not change.
Note. If the amount of pedal travel stops changing, this indicates that the automatic gap adjustment mechanism is functioning normally and the required gap between the brake shoes / and the drum has been established.
On vehicles with rear disc brakes and integral drum parking brakes, make sure the caliper-side parking brake lever touches the bracket.
Note. If the parking brake lever does not touch the bracket, the parking brake cable may be pinched or routed incorrectly, or the automatic gap adjustment mechanism inside the brake calipers may be defective. Therefore, it is necessary to check the parking brake cable, disassemble and check the rear brake caliper (pic. 15.62).

(3) Turn the adjusting nut to adjust the travel of the parking brake lever. After adjustment, check that there is no play between the adjusting nut and the parking brake lever. Make sure the adjusting nut is securely held in the holder (pic. 15.63).

Warning. If the parking brake lever travel is less than the nominal value and the braking is very strong, the rear brakes may stick (slow down).
(4) After adjusting the parking brake lever travel, jack up the rear of the vehicle. Lower the parking brake lever all the way down and, while rotating the rear wheels, make sure that the rear brakes do not stick.
