Checking the torque converter on a fully braked vehicle (Stall test)

The purpose of this check is to determine the maximum engine speed with the gearbox output shaft completely stopped on the ranges «D» And «R». This frequency can be used to determine the performance of the torque converter, freewheels, as well as the presence of slip in some of the friction elements of the gearbox control.

Attention! During this test, people in front of or behind the vehicle are prohibited.

1. Check the transmission fluid level and temperature, as well as the engine coolant temperature:

• working fluid level - mark «NOT» on the dipstick;
• working fluid temperature – 80–100°С;
• engine coolant temperature - 80-100°С.

2. Place chocks under the rear wheels.

3. Fully brake the vehicle with the parking brake and fully depress the brake pedal.

4. Start the engine.

5. Set the gear selector lever to position «D», fully depress the accelerator pedal and determine the engine speed at this point.

Attention! The accelerator pedal can be held for no more than 8 seconds.

Attention! If this test is carried out more than once in a row, after each test, move the selector lever to the position «N» and let the engine run at a frequency of 1000 min^-1 until the temperature of the oil in the gearbox reaches the operating temperature, after which the next check can be carried out.

Attention! Rated engine speed during Stall Test on range «D» is 2100–2600 min^-1

Repeat the same check for position «R» selector lever.
