Body scratch treatment
If the scratch is shallow and does not reach the metal, wipe the area around the scratch with paint refresher or fine grit abrasive paste. Rinse the surface with clean water. Apply a thin layer of paint to the scratch with a brush and let it dry. Continue to apply paint to the level of the paintwork. Let the paint harden for 2 weeks and then sand. Polish the area of the body surface with wax paste.
If the scratch, having damaged the paint, has penetrated the metal of the body, use the tip of a sharp knife to remove the rust from the scratch. Apply rust converter as directed. Apply putty paste to the scratch with a spatula. After it is completely dry, paint over and polish the damaged area.
Body dent repair
When deep indentation of body elements, first of all try to bend the dent to the maximum approximation to the normal shape of the body. The metal of the body at the point of impact is subjected to stretching, as a result of which a complete restoration of the original shape is impossible. The optimal leveling of the dent is approximately 3 mm below the level of the surrounding surface. If there is access to the inside of the dent, carefully straighten it with a hammer with a wooden or plastic head. During this operation, a wooden block of a suitable size should be pressed tightly against the outside of the straightened area. This is required to absorb hammer blows and prevent arching over a larger area. If the dent is located in an area of the body where access from the back is difficult or impossible, drill several small holes at the deepest points of the dent, insert self-tapping screws into them and pull the dent with pliers by the protruding screw heads.
Remove the paint from the damaged area and at a distance of 20 mm around it. The easiest way to do this is with a wire brush or sandpaper mounted on a circle fixed in an electric drill. After leveling the dent, apply a layer of putty, paint and polish to it.
Repair of corroded holes or holes in the body structure
Remove the paint from the damaged area approximately 20mm around it. Using a wire brush, clean loose rust from the bare metal surface of the damaged area. Treat the damaged area with a rust converter according to the instructions. Cover the hole against rust or hole with a metal mesh or a strip of aluminum foil. Cut out a piece of mesh that matches the shape of the hole, insert it into the hole so that its edges do not protrude above the level of the panel surrounding the hole. Fix it with a few lumps of putty paste around the perimeter. Using the handle of a screwdriver, align the ends of the mesh so that it fits snugly against the body metal. Next, putty, paint and polish the damaged area of \u200b\u200bthe body.
Puttying and body painting
When performing puttying work, it is necessary to have a wide flexible plastic or nylon spatula to give a smooth putty surface. Align the putty on the damaged area of the body so as to give it the desired shape and smoothness. As soon as you have achieved approximately the desired contour, stop smoothing the putty with a spatula, as if it is smoothed for too long, it will harden, stick to the spatula and roll off, as a result of which the surface will be damaged. Apply a subsequent thinner layer of putty after the previous layer has dried and so on until the level of putty begins to protrude slightly above the treated area. After hardening, excess putty must be removed with a metal scraper or file. Carry out further processing using a set of skins. Start with a coarse-grained sandpaper, then use a fine-grained one. Place the skin on a flat block of wood, otherwise it will not be possible to achieve a smooth surface. At the final stage of grinding, the waterproof skin should be periodically moistened with water. This will give the processed puttied surface a special smoothness. The puttied dent should be surrounded around the perimeter by a layer of clean metal. To remove dust and grease, rinse the treated area with water and wipe with a degreaser. Spray the area with a thin layer of light primer. This will help to identify all defects in the putty made during processing. Align them with a new layer of putty and re-sand the surface.
After that, the repair area is ready for the final painting. Spray paint must be applied in a warm, dry, windless and dust-free area. When painting indoors, dampen the floor of the work area with water to prevent dust from entering the air. When painting only one panel, the remaining parts of the body must be covered from paint on them with a newspaper attached with adhesive tape. Before applying the primer, mix it thoroughly, apply it on a test surface and ensure that it lies evenly. Create a thick layer of primer by applying several thin layers. Sand the primed surface with waterproof sandpaper. At the same time, do not forget to spray the area to be sanded with water and periodically moisten the sandpaper in water. Dry the area to be treated before further painting. Apply a coat of paint with a spray gun. The required thickness of the paint layer is achieved by applying several thin layers. Painting should start from the center of the surface to be treated and move towards the edges in a reciprocating motion until the entire surface to be painted and the area about 20 mm around it has been painted. Remove the protective film and newspapers 10–15 minutes after applying the last coat of paint. Allow the fresh paint to cure for at least two weeks, then use paint refresher or fine abrasive polishing paste to smooth the edges of the painted area to the level of the old paint. Polish the surface.
