Other considerations are the cost of the repair, the ability to access workshop equipment, the availability of spare parts, the estimated time to complete the work, and personal experience.
Here are some of the overhaul options.
Purchase of individual spare parts
If the check shows that the cylinder block and most of the parts are in a satisfactory condition and can be used in the future, then it is most economically feasible to purchase separate parts.
The cylinder block, connecting rod and piston group and the crankshaft should be examined especially carefully. Even if a slight wear of the cylinder block is detected, the cylinders must be honed.
Partial cylinder block
An incomplete cylinder block contains a cylinder block with a crank mechanism and a piston group installed. All mating parts are selected according to size groups, all clearances comply with the standards. The camshaft, valve mechanism, cylinder head and mounted units that are not part of this repair kit are separately mounted on the block. Machining costs are minimal or not required at all.
Repair engine (complete cylinder block)
The parts-supplied overhaul engine contains the entire partial cylinder block set plus the oil pump, oil pan, cylinder head, cylinder head cover, camshaft, valve train, camshaft drive gears, toothed belt, and belt covers. All parts are installed with new bearings, seals and gaskets. Only suction and exhaust manifolds and attachments are mounted on the kit.
Carefully consider which alternative suits you best, consult your local auto repair shop, parts suppliers, and engine rebuilders before purchasing or ordering parts.
