To apply the parking brake, lift the lever up without pressing the button at the end of the handle.
If the ignition key is turned to the ON position and the parking brake is applied, the warning light on the instrument panel will come on. Before driving off, check that the car has been released from the parking brake.
To release the parking brake, lift the lever up slightly, then press the button at the end of the lever and move the lever down.
If you are parking on a slope, apply the parking brake and steer the front wheels towards the curb if the vehicle is on a downhill slope, or away from the curb if the vehicle is uphill. Block the wheels.
For vehicles with automatic transmission
When parking the vehicle, be sure to set the parking brake and move the automatic transmission lever to the P-park position. When parking on a slope, you must first apply the parking brake, and then move the automatic transmission lever to the parking P gear position. This ensures that the vehicle is held in place by the parking brake and not the transmission, otherwise the automatic transmission lever may be difficult to move out of P.
For vehicles with manual transmission
Check that the drive shift lever is in any position other than neutral and engage reverse if the vehicle is on a downhill slope, or first gear if the vehicle is on an uphill slope.
