If the engine does not start due to a partially or completely discharged battery, follow the instructions for starting the engine in section «Starting the engine from an external source».
The engine is considered warm enough if the arrow of the coolant temperature gauge starts to move (engine speed decreases). Warming up the engine for too long will increase fuel consumption.
Attention! Never run the engine in an enclosed or poorly ventilated area for longer than is necessary to drive in or out. The carbon monoxide contained in the exhaust gases is odorless and can cause death.
Note. After replacing the battery, the codes of the electronic engine control unit will be erased, which can lead to unstable engine operation.
Attention! Do not attempt to start the engine by towing or pushing the vehicle. This can be very dangerous.
Attention! Do not operate the engine at high speeds or drive the vehicle at high speeds until the engine is fully warmed up.
Release the ignition key immediately after starting the engine to avoid damage to the starter.
Start
This vehicle is equipped with an engine with an electronic fuel injection system with automatic control. When starting the engine, do not press the accelerator pedal.
Ordinary (normal) conditions
The procedure for starting the engine is as follows.
Insert the key into the ignition lock and fasten the seat belt.
Raise the parking brake lever.
Press and hold down the brake pedal.
Set the gear lever to the position «N» («Neutral gear»).
Fully depress the clutch pedal.
After the key has been turned in the ignition to the position «ON» («On»), Before starting the engine, check that all indicator lamps are working properly.
Turn the ignition key to position «START’ («Starter»), without depressing the accelerator pedal and release the key when the engine starts.
Note. Clicks that are heard immediately after starting the engine are due to the design features of the engine. This is not a malfunction. As the engine warms up, the clicking will disappear. If after warming up the engine these noises do not disappear, then contact an authorized MITSUBISHI dealer to check the vehicle.
Re-enrichment of the air-fuel mixture (pouring candles)
If the fuel-air mixture is too rich when starting the engine (so-called «pouring candles»), then first turn on the starter for 5-6 seconds with the accelerator pedal fully depressed, then start the engine without pressing the accelerator pedal.
At very low ambient temperatures
If the engine does not start, then while cranking the engine with the starter, depress the accelerator pedal to approximately half of its travel. As soon as the engine starts, release the accelerator pedal.
