Removing
The starter is removed and pulled up.
Operations to be performed before removing and after installing the starter
Remove (install) air filter.
Remove (install) protective cover
Drive gear adjustment
Disconnect the starter excitation winding from the terminal «M» traction relay.
Connect a 12V battery between the terminals «S» And «M» starter.
Attention! This test should be done as quickly as possible (no more than 10 s), to exclude the possibility of overheating of the traction relay winding.
Turn on the switch. This will cause the drive lever to move the drive gear.
Use a feeler gauge to measure the clearance between the gear end and travel stop.
Nominal value: 0.5 - 2.0 mm.
If the gap differs from the given values, then it should be adjusted. Adjustment is carried out by removing or installing additional gaskets between the traction relay and the front bracket.
Checking the retracting winding of the traction relay
Disconnect the starter excitation winding from the terminal «M» traction relay.
Attention! This test should be done as quickly as possible (no more than 10 s), to exclude the possibility of overheating of the traction relay winding.
Connect a 12V battery between the terminals «S» And «M» starter.
If the drive gear moves out of the housing, then the retracting winding is OK. If the gear does not extend, then the traction relay should be replaced.
Checking the holding winding of the traction relay
Disconnect the starter excitation winding from the terminal «M» traction relay.
Attention! This test should be done as quickly as possible (no more than 10 s), to exclude the possibility of overheating of the traction relay winding.
Connect a 12V battery between terminal «S» and starter housing.
Manually move the gear until it stops.
If the gear stays in the extended position, then the holding winding is good. If the drive gear spontaneously slides into the housing, then the holding winding is faulty. Replace the traction relay.
Starter check at idle
Clamp the starter in the tool (in a vice), equipped with soft jaws, connect a fully charged battery to the starter leads.
Turn on the ammeter (with a measurement limit of 100 A) and a carbon rheostat in series between the battery positive terminal and the starter clamp.
Connect a 15 V voltmeter to the starter terminals.
Enter the rheostat in the position of maximum resistance.
Connect the wire from the negative battery terminal to the starter housing.
Pull the rheostat out until the voltmeter reads 11V.
Make sure that the current is within the specified range and that the starter armature rotates without extraneous sounds.
Permissible current: no more than 90 A.
Checking the return stroke of the traction relay
Disconnect the starter excitation winding from the terminal «M» traction relay.
Attention! This test should be done as quickly as possible (no more than 10 s), to exclude the possibility of overheating of the traction relay winding.
Connect a 12V battery between terminal «M» and starter housing.
Attention! Be careful when pulling out the drive gear.
Pull out the drive gear by hand and release it. If the gear quickly returns to its place, then the traction relay is working properly. If the gear does not return to its place, then the traction relay should be replaced.
