This test is carried out to determine the condition of the connecting wire between the terminal «IN» alternator and positive battery terminal (including fusible link).
Check the following before performing this test.
- Alternator mounts
- Drive belt tension.
- Melting insert.
- The presence of extraneous noise coming from the generator when the engine is running.
Turn the ignition key to position «LOCK» («TURNED OFF»).
Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
Connect a hanging DC ammeter with a measuring range of 0-120 A to the wire between the terminal «IN» generator and battery.
Attention! Connecting a conventional ammeter to a break in the circuit is possible if the electrical contact between the output is not broken «IN» generator and current wire.
Connect a digital voltmeter between the output «IN» alternator and battery positive terminal. Connect the positive test lead of the voltmeter to the terminal «IN» alternator and the negative test lead to the positive battery terminal.
Connect the negative cable to the battery.
Connect a tachometer or MUT-II/III diagnostic tool.
During the test, the hood of the car must be open.
Start the engine.
At a speed of 2500 min-1 Turn on headlights and other lights. Make sure that the current value measured by the ammeter is a little more than 30 A.
Gradually reduce the engine speed until the current is 30 A. Read the voltmeter.
Maximum allowable value: no more than 0.3 V.
Attention! If the value of the generator output current is high and it is not possible to lower it to 30 A, then set the current value to 40 A. Read the voltmeter. At a current of 40 A, the maximum allowable voltage drop is 0.4 V.
If the voltage drop value exceeds the specified values, then the generator current wire is faulty. In this case, it is necessary to check the condition of the current wire of the generator from the output «IN» to the positive battery terminal (including fusible link).
If the wire lugs are not tightly tightened or traces of insulation melting are visible, then reconditioning should be carried out and the check should be repeated.
After checking, release the accelerator pedal.
Turn off all lights.
Switch off the ignition.
Disconnect the tachometer or MUT-II/III diagnostic tool.
Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
Disconnect the ammeter and voltmeter.
Connect the negative cable to the battery.
