Measure the free play on the outer circumference of the steering wheel before the steerable wheels start to turn in both directions of the steering wheel turn.
Limit value: 30 mm.
If the free play exceeds the limit, check the free play on the steering column and steering gear connections. Repair or replace.
If the free play exceeds the limit, set the steering wheel to the straight ahead position and stop the engine. Apply a force of 5 N tangentially to the circumference of the steering wheel and jiggle the steering wheel in both directions to measure its free play.
Rated value (free play of the steering wheel when the engine is not running): no more than 10 mm.
If the steering wheel free play exceeds the nominal value, remove the steering gear and check the amount of total steering gear start torque.
Place the front wheel on a turning radius measuring tool and measure the steering angle.
Rated value:
- Inner wheel: 34°50'+1°30';
- Outer wheel (reference value): 29°20’.
If the steering angle is not correct, adjust the front wheel toe-in as follows.
- Nominal value: 1 + 2 mm along the center line of the tire tread.
- Convergence (on the wheel) 0°03’±05’.
Loosen the locknuts and remove the clamps from the bellows.
Adjust the toe of the front wheels by turning (in the opposite direction) the right and left turnbuckles of the transverse rods for the same distance.
Note. The toe-in is reduced if the left turnbuckle is rotated towards the front of the vehicle, the right turnbuckle is rotated towards the rear of the vehicle.
Tighten the turnbuckle locknuts to the specified torque and secure the protective covers with clamps.
Rated tightening torque: 52±2 Nm.
Recheck the angle of rotation.
