Attention:
- - Never attempt to disassemble or repair the airbag module or coiled wires. If a problem is found, replace them.
- - Do not drop the airbag module or coiled wire, or expose it to water, oil, or fuel. If dents, cracks, deformation or corrosion are found, replace the airbag module and coiled wire with new ones.
- The air bag module should be stored in a clean and dry place, on a flat, horizontal surface, positioned with the protective pad on top.
- - Do not place any objects on top of the airbag module.
- - Do not allow the airbag module to reach temperatures above 93°C.
- - After the front airbags have been deployed, their modules must be replaced with new ones. Check the coiled wire and replace it with a new one if it is defective.
Removing
− Before starting to remove parts, pay attention to the following operations:
- A) Disconnect the wire from the negative battery terminal and insulate the wire connector.
Attention: after disconnecting the cable from the battery, wait at least 60 seconds before proceeding with further work.
- b) If necessary, remove the lower casing of the steering column.
- V) (Passenger Airbag Module) If necessary, remove the instrument panel assembly.
- G) (Passenger Airbag Module) If necessary, remove the distribution duct.
- Parts are removed in the order of the numbers shown in the figure "Removing the front airbag modules and coiled wire".
Removing the front airbag modules and coiled wire.1 - steering wheel side cover, 2 - steering wheel, 3 - driver's frontal airbag module, 4 - coiled wire, 5 - passenger's frontal airbag module, 6 - auxiliary connector (models with automatic transmission), 7 - lower casing of the steering column.
− When removing parts, pay attention to the following operations:
1. Removing the side cover of the steering wheel.
Using the special tool, remove the steering wheel side cover as shown in the illustration.
2. Removing the steering wheel and driver front airbag module assembly.
A) (Modifications) To disconnect the coiled wire connector from the airbag module, use a screwdriver to release the clips as shown in the illustration.
b) (In addition to modifications) To disconnect the coiled wire connector from the airbag module, pull the retainer as shown.
V) (Modifications) To disconnect the optional coiled wire connector, release the latch as shown by the arrow in the figure.
G) Insert tool head with socket wrench (insert) to the place indicated by the arrow in the figure, then unscrew the steering wheel mounting bolt and remove it as an assembly with the driver's front airbag module.
Note: use a tool head with a hex socket wrench (insert) by 8 mm with a length of at least 75 mm.
Modifications
Apart from modifications.
3. Removing the passenger's frontal airbag module.
Using a flathead screwdriver, release the two tabs on the passenger's frontal airbag module at the same time as shown in the illustration.
Caution: Be careful not to damage the fasteners of the passenger's frontal airbag module.
Examination
Caution: never attempt to measure the resistance of the airbag module circuit (electric fuse), even with the recommended tester. Unauthorized airbag deployment may occur when the circuit resistance tester is measuring.
1. Visually check the condition of the airbag modules and coiled wire (see the relevant subsection under "Maintenance of the SRS system").
2. Checking the spiral wire circuit.
A) (Modifications) Check for continuity between connector #1 and terminal "1" connector #3.
b) (In addition to modifications) Check for continuity between connector #1 and terminal "4" connector #3.
V) Install special probes in slot #2.
Attention: to avoid damage to the connector, insert special probes only from the reverse side of the connector (from the side of the wires).
G) Connect a multimeter to special probes and check for voltage.
Installation
− Before installing parts:
- A) Temporarily connect the wire to the negative battery terminal.
- b) Connect the tester to the diagnostic socket.
Attention: when connecting or disconnecting the tester, the ignition key must be in the position "OFF" (OFF).
- V) Turn the ignition on and check that the SRS system is functioning properly (except for the fault code for the removed airbag module).
- G) Turn the ignition key to position "LOCK", disconnect the wire from the negative battery terminal and insulate the wire connector.
Attention: after disconnecting the cable from the battery, wait at least 60 seconds before proceeding with further work.
− Installation of parts is carried out in the reverse order of removal.
− When installing parts, pay attention to the following:
1. Installation of spiral wire.
A) Turn the coiled wire clockwise as far as it will go, then turn it counterclockwise about 3.75 turns (modifications) and 3 turns (except for modifications), to align the coiled wire position indicator alignment marks
Caution: If the coiled wire alignment marks are not fully aligned, steering wheel rotation may be restricted when the vehicle is turned, or the flat cable may separate from the coiled wire, causing the SRS system to malfunction and causing serious injury to the driver.
b) Align the front wheels of the vehicle parallel to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle and install the coiled wire into the steering column combination switch.
2. Installing the steering wheel and airbag module assembly.
A) Before starting the installation of the steering wheel, make sure that the alignment marks of the coiled wire position indicator are fully aligned.
Attention: before installing the steering wheel, check that the coiled wire wires are not pinched or tangled.
b) After securing the steering wheel, turn it fully in both directions to check that the steering is working properly.
− After installing the parts, perform the following operations:
- A) (Passenger Airbag Module) Install the distribution duct.
- b) (Passenger Airbag Module) Install the instrument panel assembly.
- V) Install the lower steering column cover.
- G) Connect the wire to the negative battery terminal.
- d) Check the operation of the SRS indicator.
