Disconnect the earth cable from the battery.
Attention: This erases data in the electronic memory, such as the engine fault memory or the radio code. Disconnect the battery only when the ignition is off, otherwise the control unit of the fuel injection device may fail. Before disconnecting the battery, read the instructions in sections "Radio" And "Removing and installing the battery".
Remove the ignition wires by disconnecting the spark plug connector on the distributor and removing the spark plug tips. In addition, disconnect the high voltage wire between the ignition coil and the distributor.
Attention: When doing this, remove by holding the connector, not the wire.
Measure the resistance between the spark plug tips.
On vehicles manufactured from September 1988 to August 1990, measure the resistance of the high voltage wire between the ignition coil and the ignition distributor.
- Required value for the engine 1.3 l: 4.5 kOhm
- Required value for a 1.5L engine: 2.7 kOhm
In case of increased resistance, clean the wire connection points and repeat the measurement, if necessary, replace the wire.
Bend each ignition wire around the spark plug tip and check for insulation cracks, replace all ignition wires if necessary.
Connect ground cable to battery.
Set the clock, if available, and enter the radio's security code.
