8 and 12 valve petrol engines
The toothed belt drive has an automatic belt tensioner.
If equipped, remove the servo pump V-belt.
Loosen the fastening of the water pump belt pulley, while pressing the belt lightly with your hand so that the pulley does not turn.
If equipped, remove the A/C compressor V-belt. Remove the A/C compressor pulley bracket.
Remove alternator V-belt see paragraph 1.21.
Remove upper toothed belt cover.
Remove lower toothed belt cover.
Remove the tips from all the candles and unscrew all the candles with a candle wrench.
Turn the crankshaft clockwise, checking the condition of the toothed belt. Attention: In this case, the gearbox must be set to the neutral position, and the handbrake is cocked. Rotate the crankshaft using the head on the central bolt. Always turn the crankshaft clockwise. cranking the engine, see section "Removal and installation of a gear belt".
Set the motor shaft to top dead center (TDC) 1st cylinder. To do this, turn the crankshaft to the position when the marking on the camshaft matches the corresponding mark.
Caution: Turn the pulley only clockwise, otherwise the tension of the toothed belt is broken. Do not turn the engine by the camshaft, as this will overload the toothed belt.
Loosen both bolts of the toothed belt tensioner just enough to allow the tensioner to move.
Turn the crankshaft clockwise a little so that the camshaft gear turns 2 teeth (18°).
In this position, press the tensioner in the direction of the arrow (see fig. K-1037). This achieves a position where the individual gears remain engaged with the toothed belt.
Then release the belt tensioner so that the belt is tensioned only by the spring.
Tighten the belt tensioner. First tighten the bolt in the slot -in the figure on the right-. Then tighten the pivot pin bolt -in the figure on the left-.
Caution: Never tighten the pivot bolt first, as this will cause the belt tensioner to turn and the belt to be overtightened.
Check belt tension again. To do this, as shown in the figure, press the belt with your finger approximately at the level of the middle of the belt tensioner. This should allow the belt to bend to about ¼ the width of the head of the belt tensioner pinch bolt.
Install spark plugs. Put on the tips of the candles in accordance with the ignition sequence, see point 1.2.
Install the lower toothed belt cover.
Install the top toothed belt guard.
Attach the A/C compressor belt pulley bracket.
Install the water pump belt pulley.
Install the V-belt see paragraph 1.21.
16 valve petrol engine (1.6, 1.8 l)
The 16 valve engine has a hydraulic belt tensioner that maintains a constant belt tension. Adjustment of a tension of a gear belt is made only after removal and installation of a gear belt. Since this work requires a certain amount of experience and a special tool, it should be entrusted to a specialist.
