- A special hydrometer available from the sale of related products or made available at the gas station.
In advance, before the onset of the winter period, the concentration of the coolant should be checked regularly, especially in cases where clean water is topped up.
- Warm up the engine until the radiator inlet hose is warm.
- Open the compensation tank lid.
Suck in the coolant with a hydrometer and read the float readings. In the latitudes of Germany, frost resistance down to -30°C should be ensured, in regions with a very cold climate - up to -45°C.
Adding antifreeze concentrate
, a certain amount of coolant should be drained or sucked off, and then the same amount of concentrate should be added.
Caution: Use only branded ethylene glycol based coolants. The antifreeze concentrate must be compatible with the aluminum parts of the cooling system.
Example: The hydrometer measurement result on a 1.3 l engine gave frost resistance down to -10°C. In this case, it is necessary to drain 1.5 l of coolant from the cooling system and add 1.5 l of pure concentrate. In this case, frost resistance will be -30°C.
- Close the cap on the expansion tank and, after a test drive, carry out a frost resistance test again.
