The starter consists of a drive housing and a pole housing with a collector. An armature and a collector, as well as a brush holder, are placed in the pole and collector housing. The brush holder contains carbon brushes, which are wear parts that are subject to wear, although slowly but constantly. If the brushes are too worn, the starter stops working normally.
A gear drive is located in the front drive housing. When voltage is applied to the starter through the ignition switch, with the help of a traction relay located on the drive housing, the gear moves along the thread to the flywheel ring gear. As soon as the gear reaches the stop of the threaded shaft, it engages with the flywheel. Now the transfer of torque from the starter to the engine is ensured to develop the required number of revolutions. When the engine starts, the gear receives acceleration from it, that is, for some short time it rotates faster than the engine and disengages, due to which the connection between the starter and the engine is broken.
Since a large current is required to start an internal combustion engine, it is necessary to ensure that the wires are connected perfectly as part of maintenance. Corroded contacts should be coated with protective paste.
Depending on the type of engine, 12-volt starters of various capacities are installed on COLT /LANCER: on gasoline engines 0.7 /1.2 kW; on diesel engines 2.0 / 2.2 kW.
Removing
Disconnect the earth cable from the battery.
Attention: This erases data in the electronic memory, such as the engine fault memory or the radio code. Disconnect the battery only when the ignition is off, otherwise the control unit of the fuel injection device may fail. Before disconnecting the battery, read the instructions in sections "Radio" And "Removing and installing the battery".
Engines 84 / 90 hp: Detach intake manifold bracket.
Disconnect the starter wire from terminal 50 (to the ignition switch).
Disconnect the battery cable from terminal 30.
Remove the 2 bolts from the gearbox and remove the starter motor with the clutch housing.
Installation
Insert starter, tighten 2 bolts to 30 Nm.
Screw the wire onto terminal 30 with a force of 15 Nm.
Push the cable connector onto terminal 50 until it snaps into place.
If removed, insert the intake manifold support and tighten the 4 bolts to 20 Nm.
Connect ground cable to battery.
If available, set the time on the clock and enter the security code into the radio.
