The steering consists of a steering wheel, a steering shaft, a steering gear and steering rods. The steering wheel is fixed on the steering shaft connecting it with the steering gear. The gear rack moves in the steering gear.
Each end of the threaded rail is connected via ball joints to steering rods. They transmit control forces through the steering tips and steering knuckles to the front wheels.
Rack and pinion steering must be easy to move and free of play throughout the entire rotation range. It does not require any maintenance other than checking the condition of the seals.
In some models or with certain equipment, power steering is installed to make driving easier. See 16.6 for guidance on this.
Caution: Be sure to replace the self-locking nuts. Welding and straightening work with steering is not allowed. If there is a lack of experience and if major repairs are necessary, visit a service station.
