Raise the car from behind see par. 29.
Check the correct laying and secure fit of the cable in the holders and guides.
Release the hand brake lever.
Slowly pull the handbrake lever up and count the number of clicks. With a force of 200 N (corresponds to 20 kg on spring scales) the handbrake lever travel should be 4 to 7 clicks.
If there is a deviation from the required value, make the correct brake pad clearance adjustment as described below.
Adjustment (production cars from 1.84 to 5.89)
Remove the console trim at the handbrake lever, see 20.15.
Loosen the locknut and screw the adjusting nut to the end of the handbrake cable.
Pull the handbrake lever several times with a force of approximately 200 N (20 kg) until the lever stroke becomes constant.
Attention: If the stroke length of the handbrake lever is unchanged, the automatic brake shoe adjuster functions normally and the clearance between the brake shoe and the brake drums is normal.
Adjust the correct stroke of the handbrake lever by turning the adjusting nut.
Caution: There must be no play between the handbrake lever and the adjusting nut.
Attention: If the number of clicks of the handbrake lever is less than required, the handbrake cable will be overstretched. Because of this, the normal operation of the automatic brake pad installation mechanism is not ensured. Therefore, be sure to achieve the required number of clicks.
After adjustment, tighten the locknut while holding the adjusting nut with a wrench.
Release the handbrake and spin the rear wheels. The brake pads must not rub, otherwise repeat the adjustment.
Lower the car.
Install console overlay.
Adjustment (cars produced from 6.89 to 3.92)
Remove the console trim at the handbrake lever, see 20.16.
Loosen the locknut and unscrew the adjusting nut to the end of the handbrake cable.
Start the engine and let it run at idle speed 5-6 times strongly press the brake pedal. In this case, the automatic brake pad setting mechanism sets the pads in the correct position.
Check clearance between handbrake lever and stop. Required value: 2 mm or less. If it deviates from the required value, the handbrake cable jams or it does not sit correctly in the guides, or the automatic brake shoe setting mechanism is hard to move.
Adjust the shim to the desired travel of the handbrake lever.
Caution: There must be no play between the handbrake lever and the adjusting nut.
Attention: If the number of clicks of the handbrake lever is lower than required, the handbrake cable will be overstretched. Because of this, the normal operation of the automatic brake pad setting mechanism is not ensured.
