The engine compartment hood, tailgate or trunk lid, doors and front fenders are bolted to the body and can be easily replaced. When installing, it is only necessary to strictly maintain the correct clearance, otherwise, for example, the door may begin to knock, or wind noise will increase during movement. In any case, the clearance must run parallel, that is, the distance between the body parts must be the same along the entire length.
Along with body parts, this section also describes interior fittings such as seats and upholstery. If welding is required, only spot welding must be used. Only in those places where welding tongs do not pass, use gas welding.
Body work precautions
When carrying out welding or other work accompanied by a neoplasm in the immediate vicinity of the battery, be sure to remove the battery. When removing the battery, follow the instructions in paragraph 23.10.
Parts of a charged air conditioner must not be subjected to welding, soft or hard soldering. This applies to welding and soldering work on the vehicle if there is a risk of heating up the air conditioner components.
Attention: Do not open the cooling circuit of the air conditioner.
In places especially prone to corrosion, galvanized iron is installed. Do not strip the zinc layer during welding (cleaned only when soldering). Increase the welding current by about 10%.
Attention: When welding galvanized iron, poisonous zinc oxide is released, so the workplace must be well ventilated.
Remove the underbody protection and sealing materials at the repair site with a rotating wire brush or with a hair dryer heated to a maximum of +180°C and separate with a spatula.
When repainting the car, warm up to no more than + 80°C, otherwise the electronic control units in the car may be damaged.
