Removing
1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
If the stereo system installed in the car is equipped with a security code, before disconnecting the battery, make sure that you have the correct combination to activate the audio system!
2. Jack up the car and put it on stands.
3. Remove the appropriate rear wheel.
4. On models equipped with ABS, remove the wheel sensor - in order to avoid sensor failure, try to prevent its electrical contact with metal suspension elements.
5. Remove the rear brake caliper and, without disconnecting the hydraulic line, tie it with wire to the suspension elements, remove the brake disc.
6. Turn out bolts of fastening of a semiaxis to a connecting flange, give nuts and remove washers, - for the purpose of providing access to a self-locking nut slightly take away the half shaft end aside.
7. Using a special tool type MB9b11-01, block the axle shaft, then give the self-locking nut.
8. Using a puller with a nozzle (MB9b11-01 and MB9b41-01) Release the rear axle trunnion from the trailing arm assembly.
9. On ABS equipped models, remove the wheel sensor rotor from the trunnion (use a suitable bushing and press).
10. Using a press, remove the outer bearing with dust cover from the trunnion.
11. Using a puller, release the oil seal and inner bearing from the trailing arm assembly.
12. Assess the condition of the connecting flange and axle pin. Check the dust cover for signs of deformation or other mechanical damage. Carefully inspect the bearings for signs of overheating. Replace defective components.
Installation
1. Using a suitable drift, fit the inner bearing into the trailing arm assembly. Install the seal next (arched up and until it stops against the shoulders of the inner lever).
Note. As a mandrel for planting the stuffing box, you can use a suitable size socket head, or a piece of pipe of the appropriate diameter. Tap the gland gradually and evenly - use a soft-faced hammer.
2. Push the dust caps into the hangers as far as they will go (internal - deepening outward).
3. Lubricate the inside of the outer bearing seal lips with multipurpose grease. Place the bearing on the axle (jaws of the stuffing box to the connecting flange).
4. Press the wheel sensor mouth into place (groove towards the flange).
5. Temporarily install the trunnion onto the trailing arm assembly. Install the connecting flange and screw on a new self-locking nut.
6. While holding the pin from turning with the MB9b11-01 tool, tighten the self-locking nut to the required torque (220 Nm).
7. Install new axle nuts, prepare washers, screw in and tighten with the required force (55÷65 Nm) fixing bolts.
8. Install brake disc, caliper and parking brake components (see chapter Brake system).
9. Install the wheels and lower the vehicle to the ground. Check parking brake setting, adjust if necessary (see chapter Brake system).
10. Before starting to operate the vehicle, "pump" foot brake pedal until hardness appears when depressing it.
