Note. Make sure the battery is fully charged before checking the condition of the starter.
1. If the starter does not rotate when the ignition key is turned to the START position, first make sure that the selector lever is in the "R" or "N" (models with AT) / in the completeness of squeezing the clutch (models with manual transmission).
2. Check the battery charge level, evaluate the condition and reliability of fastening of the contact terminals of the battery and starter.
3. If the starter rotates properly but the engine does not crank, replace the freewheel drive assembly.
4. If the starter does not turn, despite the correct click of the traction relay, the cause of the failure may lie in a malfunction of the battery condition, oxidation of the main contact terminals of the starter, or failure of the starter assembly electric motor itself. The possibility of engine jamming is also not ruled out.
5. If no clicks are heard when turning the key, check the condition of the battery, protective fusible link of the starting circuit and the starter enable relay. It is possible that the magnetic starter itself is faulty.
6. Disconnecting the coil assembly, deactivate the ignition system. Make sure the engine cannot be started.
7. Connect a voltmeter between the positive battery terminal and the B+ terminal of the starter.
8. Turn the ignition key to the START position and read the voltmeter reading.
9. If the measurement result exceeds 0.5 V, therefore, there is an open or short circuit in the starter circuit wiring, make the necessary remedial repairs. If the voltage is OK, proceed to the next step of the test.
10. Connect a voltmeter between the positive battery terminal and the M terminal. Turn the key to the START position and read the reading.
11. If the measurement result exceeds the value of 0.5 V, therefore, there is an open or short circuit in the starter circuit wiring, make the necessary remedial repairs.
12. A more detailed check of the starter can be made on a workbench using a special diagnostic tester - ask from car accessories stores.
