Airbag modules
Pillow activation (ek) safety occurs when the SRS directional overload sensors are triggered. Closing the circuit of the airbag module leads to almost instantaneous filling of the latter with nitrogen released as a result of the combustion of a powdery mixture of sodium azide with copper oxide. In the event of failure of the on-board battery, the system switches to power from a backup source built into the SRS module. It should be noted that the passenger airbag is usually larger in volume than the driver's airbag and is equipped with a metal carrier body, which splits into two halves when the module is triggered, and a finishing cover.
Sensor unit / diagnostic module
The SRS sensor and self-diagnosis module provides power to the airbag modules at the time of a collision that causes sufficiently severe directional overloads. The system is activated even in the event of an emergency failure of the onboard battery. The status of the SRS components is polled by the module every time the engine is started and is accompanied by a short-term operation of the control lamp mounted in the instrument panel of the car "AIR BAG"/SRS. In case of failure of any beater of the nodes, the control lamp does not turn off. A malfunction in the system is also indicated by the operation of the warning lamp while driving - the car should be driven to a service station as soon as possible.
Precautionary measures
Removal and maintenance of the steering column components, radio and other components located near the instrument panel requires special precautions, as accidental damage to the SRS wiring can cause unauthorized airbag deployment, resulting in serious injury. The SRS wiring harness is easy to identify by the bright yellow color of the insulation - in no case do not disconnect its connectors and do not connect any electrical diagnostic tools to them.
Attention! Always switch off the system before doing any work near the SRS components!
The air bag module removed from the vehicle should be kept facing away from you - move the assembly to a safe location and lay it face up.
In no case do not try to measure the resistance of the SRS components - the energy generated by the internal power supply of the ohmmeter may be quite enough to trigger the gas generators!
SRS must be deactivated before any electronic equipment is used on the vehicle (see below).
In no case should you throw away airbag modules that have never deployed in garbage bins - advice on the disposal of SRS components can always be obtained at service stations.
Disabling the SRS system
To disable the airbags, perform the following manipulations:
- a) Bring the steering wheels of the car to a straight position, turn the ignition key to the LOCK position and remove it from the lock;
- b) Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
Attention! If the stereo system installed in the car is equipped with a security code, before disconnecting the battery, make sure that you have the correct combination to activate the audio system!
- c) Wait at least 60 seconds for the SRS emergency power supply capacitor to discharge before doing any work.
SRS activation
To activate the system, connect the negative cable to the battery, turn the ignition key to position and verify that the SRS warning light is working properly.
