Warning! Before doing any work near the airbag unit, steering column or instrument panel, turn off the SRS to avoid injury if it is accidentally deployed (see chapter Onboard electrical equipment). SRS circuit wiring is easily identified by the yellow color of the insulation.
Removing
1. Deactivate the airbag if equipped with the vehicle (see chapter Onboard electrical equipment).
2. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
Attention! If the stereo system installed in the car is equipped with a security code, before disconnecting the battery, make sure that you have the correct combination to activate the audio system!
3. Remove the hood lock release handle from the lower trim section.
4. Remove the knee brace.
5. Remove the knee level air sleeve and remove the steering wheel (see Section Removal and installation of a steering wheel).
6. Remove the top and bottom sections of a casing of a steering column.
7. On Diamante models, remove the knee blower and footwell air supply hose.
8. In case of need release a plait of electroconducting from intermediate clamps on a steering column.
9. Disunite corresponding contact sockets.
10. On the Galant and Diamante models, unscrew the fixing screws and remove the steering column switch from the left side of the steering column (airbag contact spring assembly - models equipped with SRS).
11. On Diamante models, unscrew the fixing screws and remove the key cylinder ignition switch.
12. Insert the key into the ignition lock cylinder and turn it to the ACC position.
13. Using a suitable sharp tool, push the locking pin inside the steering column lock cylinder and pull the lock cylinder out.
14. With the appropriate configuration, dismantle the signal sensor-switch for removing the ignition key.
Installation
1. On Mirage models, install the lock cylinder to its support bracket.
Note. If the bracket was replaced, then before breaking off the heads of the shear locks, make sure that the cylinder is functioning properly.
2. On the Galant and Diamante models, install the cylinder into the casing of the lock assembly, - make sure that the latches snap into place. Fill the ignition switch into the casing, achieve the alignment of the keyholes and screw in the fixing screws.
3. On Galant and Diamante models, reinstall SRS stalk/contact drum assembly, restore original wiring connections.
4. If equipped, install the signal sensor-switch for removing the key.
5. Connect the electrical wiring and install the retainer.
6. If removed, reinstall the knee blower and the air duct sleeve.
7. Establish casings of a steering column.
8. Install steering wheel and knee brace.
9. Install the hood release handle.
10. Connect the negative cable to the battery, activate the airbag and check the ignition switch for proper operation.
