The design of the parking brake drive on Galant models manufactured in 1994÷1995, equipped with rear wheel disc brakes

Attention! If the vehicle is equipped with the appropriate equipment, before proceeding with the removal of the parking brake cables, turn off the SRS (airbags)!
Mirage models with rear wheel drum brakes
Removing
1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
Attention! If the stereo system installed in the car is equipped with a security code, before disconnecting the battery, make sure that you have the correct combination to activate the audio system!
2. Turn out fixing screws and remove back section of the central console.
Attention! On models equipped with an additional security system, try not to shock the SRS diagnostic unit!
3. Remove the rear seat cushion.
4. Remove the clamp securing the center section of the drive cable and release the bushing.
5. Jack up the car and put it on stands.
6. Remove rear wheels, brake drums and shoe assemblies (see Sections Removal, installation and check of a condition of a brake drum and Checking the condition of the brake shoes).
7. Disconnect the tip of the drive cable from the parking brake lever.
8. Squeeze the clamps and disconnect the drive cable from the brake shield.
9. Release a cable from all provided intermediate clamps and remove it from the car.
Installation
1. Sometimes drive cables are marked for identification purposes by applying colored marks. Check cables for identification markings.
2. Connect the cable to the rear actuator and secure it with a special clamp and spring clip.
3. Install brake shoes and drum.
4. Loosely fasten the cable in the intermediate clamps.
5. Connect the cables to the actuator in the car.
6. Adjust the rear brake shoes.
7. Check that the cable assembly snaps into place in all provided latches.
8. After completing all adjustments, apply and release the parking brake several times.
9. Jack up the back of the car and check the freedom of rotation of the rear wheels with the parking brake released.
10. Install the center console and rear seat assembly.
11. Connect the negative cable to the battery.
12. Check up reliability of deduction of the car a parking brake on a slope.
Mirage models with rear wheel disc brakes
Removing
1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
Attention! If the stereo system installed in the car is equipped with a security code, before disconnecting the battery, make sure that you have the correct combination to activate the audio system!
2. Turn out fixing screws and remove back section of the central console.
Attention! On models equipped with an additional security system, try not to shock the SRS diagnostic unit!
3. Remove the rear seat cushion.
4. Loosen the adjusting nut and disconnect the drive cables from the actuator.
5. Remove the clamp securing the center section of the drive cable and release the bushing.
6. Jack up the car and put it on stands.
7. Disconnect the tip of the drive cable from the parking brake assembly.
8. Compress clamps and disconnect a drive cable from a board of the brake mechanism.
9. Release a cable from all provided intermediate clamps and remove it from the car.
Installation
1. Sometimes drive cables are marked for identification purposes by applying colored marks. Check cables for identification markings.
2. Connect the cable to the rear actuator and secure it with a special clamp and spring clip.
3. Loosely fasten the cable in the intermediate clamps.
4. Connect the cables to the actuator in the car.

6. Tighten the adjusting nut to take up the slack in the cable.
7. Adjust the parking brake (see Section Parking brake adjustment).
8. When finished adjusting, apply and release the parking brake several times.
9. Jack up the back of the car and check the freedom of rotation of the rear wheels with the parking brake released.
10. Install the center console and rear seat assembly.
11. Connect the negative cable to the battery.
Galant models through 1993 no. with drum brakes on the rear wheels
Removing
1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
Attention! If the stereo system installed in the car is equipped with a security code, before disconnecting the battery, make sure that you have the correct combination to activate the audio system!
2. Remove side panels of finishing of the central console.
3. On models with a manual transmission, remove the handle from the gear lever. On models with АТ remove facing of the selector lever.
4. Remove the switch panel/console glove box and unscrew the two fixing screws located under it/it.
5. Remove the panel of facing of a radio receiver.
6. Remove the radio.
7. Remove the internal panel of finishing of the console in turn out two screws located under it.
8. Remove the remaining mounting screws located on the sides of the console assembly.
9. Remove the central console.
10. Press down the front edge of the rear seat cushion, release the locking levers and remove the cushion.
11. Loosen the cable adjuster on the equalizer assembly.
12. Remove the clamp securing the central section of the drive cable and release the bushing.
13. Jack up the car and put it on stands.
14. Remove the rear wheels, brake drums and shoe assemblies (see Sections Removal, installation and check of a condition of a brake drum and Checking the condition of the brake shoes).
15. Disconnect the tip of the drive cable from the parking brake lever.

Removing
1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.

2. Remove side panels of finishing of the central console.
3. On models with a manual transmission, remove the handle from the gear lever. On models with АТ remove facing of the selector lever.

6. Remove the radio.
7. Remove the internal panel of finishing of the console in turn out two screws located under it.
8. Remove the remaining mounting screws located on the sides of the console assembly.

10. Press down the front edge of the rear seat cushion, release the locking levers and remove the cushion.
11. Loosen the adjusting nut and disconnect the rear sections of the cable assembly from the actuator.
12. Remove the clamp securing the central section of the drive cable and release the bushing.
13. Jack up the car and put it on stands.
14. Release the retainer and retaining ring that secures the cable to the rear wheel brake caliper.
15. Disconnect the tip of the cable from the caliper.
16. Release a cable from all provided intermediate clamps and remove it from the car.
Installation
1. Sometimes drive cables are marked for identification purposes by applying colored marks. Check cables for identification markings.
2. Connect the cable to the actuator on the caliper assembly and secure it with the retainer and circlip.
3. Loosely fasten the cable in the intermediate clamps.
4. Connect the cables to the actuator in the car. After tightening the adjusting nut, take up any slack in the cable assembly.
5. Adjust drive cable travel (see Section Parking brake adjustment).
6. Check that the cable assembly snaps into place in all provided latches.
7. After completing all adjustments, cock and release the parking brake several times.
8. Jack up the back of the car and check the freedom of rotation of the rear wheels with the parking brake released.
9. Install the center console and rear seat assembly.
10. Connect the negative cable to the battery.
11. Check up serviceability of functioning of the electric equipment which is built in console assembly.
12. Carry out a road test of the car.
13. Check up reliability of deduction of the car by a parking brake on a slope.
Galant models since 1994 with drum brakes on the rear wheels
Removing
1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.

2. On models with a manual transmission, remove the handle from the gear lever. On models with АТ remove facing of the selector lever.
3. Remove the instrument section of the center console.
4. Remove the console storage box.
5. Turn out two screws of fastening of the central section of the console.
6. Turn out four screws of fastening of lateral panels and remove the console from the car.
7. Loosen the adjusting nut and release the drive cable from the vehicle interior.
8. Jack up the car and put it on stands.
9. Remove rear wheels, brake drums and shoe assemblies (see Sections Removal, installation and check of a condition of a brake drum and Checking the condition of the brake shoes).
10. Disconnect the tip of the drive cable from the parking brake lever.
11. Squeeze the clamps and disconnect the drive cable from the brake shield.
12. Release a cable from all provided intermediate clamps and remove it from the car.
Installation

Galant models since 1994 with rear wheel disc brakes
Removing
1. Unlike the options discussed earlier, on these models, the parking brake is not built into the brake caliper. In this case, separate friction shoes are used, installed behind the brake disc.
2. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
Attention! If the stereo system installed in the car is equipped with a security code, before disconnecting the battery, make sure that you have the correct combination to activate the audio system!
3. On models with a manual transmission, remove the handle from the gear lever. On models with АТ remove facing of the selector lever.
4. Remove the instrument section of the center console.
5. Remove the console storage box.
6. Turn out two screws of fastening of the central section of the console.
7. Remove the four side screws and remove the console assembly.
8. Release an adjusting nut and release cable assembly from inside of the car.
9. Jack up the car and put it on stands.
10. Remove the rear wheel, brake caliper and disc (see Sections Removal and installation of brake calipers and Removal, condition check and installation of a brake disk).
11. Remove the parking brake friction shoes (see Section Removal and installation of friction shoes of the parking brake (models with rear disc brakes)).
12. Disconnect the cable assembly from the parking brake actuating lever.
13. Release clamps and release a cable from a brake board.
14. Release the retainer and retaining ring that secures the cable to the rear wheel brake caliper.
15. Release a cable from all provided intermediate clamps and remove it from the car.
Installation
1. Connect the cable to the rear actuator and secure it with the retainer and circlip.
2. Install parking brake friction shoes.
3. Install the brake disc and caliper (see Sections Removal and installation of brake calipers and Removal, condition check and installation of a brake disk).
4. Loosely fasten the cable in the intermediate clamps.
5. Connect the cables to the actuator in the car.
6. Tighten the adjusting nut to take up any slack in the cable assembly.
7. Adjust drive cable travel (see Section Parking brake adjustment).
8. Check that the cable assembly snaps into place in all provided latches.
9. After completing all adjustments, cock and release the parking brake several times.
10. Jack up the back of the car and check the freedom of rotation of the rear wheels with the parking brake released.
11. Install the center console.
12. Connect the negative cable to the battery.
13. Check up serviceability of functioning of the electric equipment which is built in console assembly.
14. Carry out a road test of the vehicle.

Diamante Models
Removing
Attention! Work should be started at least 90 seconds after the ignition key is turned to the LOCK position and the negative cable is disconnected from the battery! If your vehicle is equipped accordingly, be sure to deactivate the airbags as well.
1. On Diamante models, the rear wheels are equipped with disc brakes with separate friction shoes for the parking brake. The shoes are located behind the brake disc.
2. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.

4. Remove the ashtray/switch panel from the center console assembly.
5. Turn out two screws located in the central part of the console.
6. Turn out lateral screws and remove console assembly from the car.

8. Jack up the car and put it on stands.

10. Remove the parking brake friction shoes (see Section Removal and installation of friction shoes of the parking brake (models with rear disc brakes)).
11. Disconnect the cable assembly from the parking brake actuating lever.
12. Release clamps and release a cable from a brake board.
13. Release a cable from all provided intermediate clamps and remove it from the car.
