A winch or hoist is required. Prepare all the necessary tools and fixtures. Read the sequence of operations carefully. Observe security measures. If necessary, consult or use the services of a workshop.
Engine Removal - Methods and Precautions
If you decide that the engine needs to be removed for overhaul or repair, some preparatory work must be done.
It is extremely important to provide a suitable place for the work to be carried out. You will need a fairly spacious room that allows you to place the car itself in it. If you don't have a dedicated workshop or garage, at least a flat, smooth surface area is required.
If you clean the engine and engine compartment before starting work, your tools and hands will remain clean.
You will also need a winch for the engine. Make sure the lifting capacity of the equipment you are using is rated for the combined weight of the engine and its various components. It must be taken into account that safety should be the main factor in the organization of work.
If the engine is removed by a beginner, the presence of an assistant is necessary. The advice and help of more experienced craftsmen may also be useful. In many cases, it is simply impossible to handle all the necessary steps when removing the engine from the car alone.
Plan your work ahead of time. Acquire all the necessary tools, tools and equipment before starting work. Here are some accessories needed to carry out the removal and installation of the engine:
- tripod goats (2 or 4 pcs.) or 2 ramps (flyovers);
- cargo trolley;
- floor jack designed for heavy loads;
- complete sets of keys;
- wooden blocks;
- plenty of clean rags and solvent to clean up spilled coolant oil and fuel.
If it is possible to borrow a winch, take care of it in advance, and perform all the operations prior to working with a winch before you have it. This will save you time.
Always take special care when removing and installing the engine. Careless handling can result in very serious injury. Plan ahead, work calmly and then the work, despite its complexity, will end successfully.
Putting the car on stands (goats)
To avoid damage to the underside of the vehicle, the vehicle jack and the tripods used to lift the vehicle should only be placed in the places provided for this purpose. Under no circumstances should the jack be placed under the front or rear wheel suspension brackets.
The jack can also be used to raise the car. In this case, it is necessary to raise one side first, put the stand goats under the body (try not to damage the color), and then lift the other side.
Before raising the rear of the vehicle, engage reverse gear or first gear. While raising the front of the vehicle, tighten the parking brake lever. For safety, support the rear wheels with wedges or place stops on both sides (bricks).
Be sure to pay attention to the fact that the surface on which the car is put on the jacks is not soft, so that the jack or jacks do not get stuck in the ground. If put under the jack (garage) wide board, this danger will be greatly reduced. The same applies to the car jack. Sometimes the ground appears solid until it becomes apparent that the base of the jack is slowly sinking into the soil.
The jack stands can only be installed under the body in the appropriate places, but they must be properly closed so that they cannot damage the body. A piece of an old car-mobile tire is excellent for this, if you put it between the goats and the body.
Ramp (overpass) is the most convenient tool for lifting the car, since you can do without a jack. When hitting it, naturally make sure that the guides are exactly in front of the wheels. For added safety, the guides should have grooves for the wheels on the surface of the platform. In the figure you can see how the wheel should stand on such a flyover.
