On engines with an ignition system without a distributor, it is not necessary to set the ignition timing. To make it easier to check the ignition timing, it is recommended to mark the crankshaft pulley and the toothed belt guard.
A tachometer is required to check and set the ignition timing.
Warm up the engine to operating temperature and turn it off.
Turn off all electrical consumers.
Place the transmission in neutral position, apply the handbrake. With an automatic transmission, set the lever to position P.
Connect the tachometer and stroboscope according to the manufacturer's instructions. If the ignition coil is built into the ignition distributor on the car and a tachometer is not installed, then the speed signal can be removed as shown in the figure.
Start the engine and leave it to idle.
Check the number of revolutions. Adjust the RPM if it is outside 700-900 rpm.
Aim the strobe light at the TDC mark on the crankshaft pulley.
The ignition timing is set correctly if, when the strobe lamp lights up, the risk on the crankshaft pulley is opposite the desired mark on the toothed belt housing.
If the ignition timing marks do not match, loosen the ignition distributor clamp nut and adjust the ignition timing by turning the ignition distributor.
Fasten the ignition distributor with a force of 10 Nm.
Imperative devices disconnect at the switched off ignition.
At service stations, the inertial and vacuum correction of the ignition timing is additionally checked at various engine speeds.

- On vehicles with power steering, set the steering wheel to «directly».
- Connect the engine speed meter and stroboscope according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Insert a paper clip into the diagnostic socket.
- Connect an engine speed meter.
- Check the number of revolutions. It should be within 850±100 rpm. Otherwise, check the idle speed control.
- Switch off the ignition.
- Remove the plug from the terminal for setting the ignition timing, connect the terminal to ground through the auxiliary wire.
- Start the engine, leaving it to idle.
- Check ignition timing.
- If the ignition timing is out of tolerance, loosen the crankshaft position sensor nut slightly. Set the ignition timing by turning the sensor.
- Tighten the fastening nut.
- Switch off the ignition and remove the auxiliary wire. Put the plug on the connector of the ignition installation.
