Removing
Note the direction of rotation of the toothed belt.
Unscrew the upper engine mount while supporting the engine.
Unscrew the water pump pulley by slightly pressing the V-belt with your hand so that the pulley does not turn.
Remove the V-belt.
Set the crankshaft to TDC of the 1st cylinder. How to correctly set the engine to the TDC of the 1st cylinder?
Remove the top casing of a gear belt.
Turn the engine crankshaft clockwise until the camshaft reaches the TDC position.
Spin the engine. Align the mark on the camshaft gear with the TDC mark on the cylinder head. The engine is set to the TDC position of the ignition of the first cylinder.
Disconnect the crankshaft pulley from the crankshaft.
Remove the bottom casing of a gear belt.
Mark the direction of movement of the toothed belt which moves clockwise.
Loosen the toothed belt tensioner set screw.
Loosen the toothed belt tension and tighten the mounting bolt so that the belt tensioner setting does not go astray.
Remove the toothed belt.
Examination
Visually check the condition of the toothed belt. If any of the following defects are found, replace the belt.
Teeth are broken or cracked at the base
Possible causes of defects:
- jamming of the camshaft and distributor;
- damaged crankshaft and or camshaft seals.
The reverse side of the belt is badly worn or cracked
Possible causes of defects:
- jamming of the tension roller;
- engine overheating;
- belt hits the cover.
The side of the belt is worn. The edges of the belt are rounded, the cord threads are disheveled and come out
Possible causes of defects:
- incorrect installation of the belt;
- the side surfaces of the idler roller are notched or heavily worn.
Tooth wear. The outer coating on the thrust surface of the teeth is worn off, the rubber layer under it is worn and has a whitish color
Possible causes of defects:
- poor sealing of the belt cover;
- leak in the coolant pump;
- incorrect operation of the camshaft;
- incorrect operation of the distributor;
- excessive belt tension.
Oil, coolant or water on the belt
Possible causes of defects:
- poor sealing in the glands;
- leak in the coolant pump;
- poor belt cover seal.
Check the TDC position of the camshaft (1) and cranked (2) motor shafts.
Check if the camshaft is at the TDC position of the ignition of the 1st cylinder. The marking on the camshaft gear must match the mark on the cylinder head. The crankshaft must not be in the TDC position.
Place the toothed belt over the crankshaft gear, keep the tension side of the toothed belt taut, then route the toothed belt over the camshaft gear through the tensioner. A used toothed belt must be installed in the same direction of travel.
Turn the camshaft gear counterclockwise a little. Unscrew the tensioner pinch bolt. Install the crankshaft belt pulley so that the toothed belt does not come off when the crankshaft rotates.
Tension the toothed belt.
Check the TDC position of the crankshaft and camshafts of the engine. All marks and markings of the TDC with a tensioned toothed belt must match.
Establish the lower casing of a gear belt.
Tighten the crankshaft belt pulley with the central bolt with a tightening torque of 100 Nm. For this:
- turn on 1st gear;
- press the brake pedal;
- tighten the 4 fixing bolts to 15 Nm.
Fasten the water pump pulley with 10 Nm.
Install the V-belt.
Attach the upper engine mount.
Check that the ignition timing is set correctly.
