ATTENTION: Checking and adjusting the valves is carried out both on a hot and cold engine. In the latter case, it is necessary to re-check the valve clearance on a hot engine.
Examination
Start and warm up the engine to a coolant temperature of 80-90°C, and then turn off the engine.
Remove the intake manifold top and remove the glow plugs.
Remove the cylinder head cover.
Set the transmission to neutral and apply the handbrake.
Turn the crankshaft by the central bolt clockwise until the groove on the pulley aligns with the mark «T». The pistons of the 1st and 4th cylinders are now at TDC. Cylinders are counted from left to right. Cylinder 1 is located on the side of the engine V-belt.
By moving the rocker arms of cylinders 1 and 4 up and down by hand, check which cylinder is at TDC. If there is clearance at the same time in the intake and exhaust valves, then this cylinder is in the TDC position of the compression stroke.
If the piston of the 1st cylinder is in the TDC position of the compression stroke, then the clearance of the valves indicated by the white arrows is adjusted.
If the piston of the 4th cylinder is in the TDC position of the compression stroke, then the valve clearance indicated by black arrows is adjusted.
ATTENTION: To change the position of the cylinders, it is necessary to turn the crankshaft one revolution clockwise.
Measure the valve clearance between the rocker arm and the valve surface with a feeler gauge.
If the feeler gauge is pulled through with an interference fit, then the clearance is correctly adjusted.
Required valve clearances
Desired value on a hot engine
Inlet valve | 0.25 mm |
Exhaust valve | 0.25 mm |
Required value when the engine is cold
Inlet valve | 0.15 mm |
Exhaust valve | 0.15 mm |
Loosen the locknut about 1/2 turn while holding the adjusting screw with a screwdriver.
By turning the adjusting screw, set the valve clearance by constantly moving the feeler gauge.
Tighten locknut.
Recheck the valve clearance and readjust if necessary.
Turn the crankshaft one more turn and check the clearance in other valves.
Then check the insertion and tightness of the mounting screws and rocker arm mounting brackets.
Stop the cylinder head cover.
Screw in the glow plugs and install the upper part of the intake manifold.
