Uneven premature wear
Many causes cause uneven and premature wear. Below are some of them: sub-optimal tire pressure, uneven rotation, insufficient driver skills, imperfect wheel alignment.
If the wheels are readjusted for tire wear, the toe angle should be set as close to zero as the specification allows.
If wear is detected, the tires should be inspected in rotation to identify:
- differences in front and rear tire wear;
- uneven wear across the tread width;
- uneven wear of the left and right tires on the front wheels;
- uneven wear of the left and right tires on the rear wheels.
Re-adjust if detected:
- uneven wear of the left and right tires;
- uneven wear across the width of the tire of any of the front tires;
- sharp edge («goatee») on one side of the tread.
Signs of tread wear
Check for signs of tread wear:- the appearance of stripes 12.7 mm wide, where the depth of the tread pattern is less than 1.2 mm;
- if two or more grooves appear (A) in three places, the tire needs to be replaced.
