Drum brakes are installed on the rear wheels of the car, which automatically maintain the gap between the pads and the drum. Two semicircular brake pads under the action of a wheel brake cylinder fixed at the top are pressed against a cylindrical brake drum. This design with one wheel cylinder for two pads is called simplex brakes. The drum brake is «self-reinforcing», namely, the brake shoe, due to the rotation of the wheel, to a certain extent, itself is pressed against the drum. Due to this, little effort is required on the pedals. When moving forward, the front pad works with effort. It is called the active or primary brake pad, the rear is called the passive or secondary brake pad.

With this design of the brake, the brake clearance is self-adjusting after the brake pedal is lowered.
