Removing
1. Remove the valve cover.
2. Set the first piston to top dead center.
4.3 Remove the screws (indicated by arrows), fixing the axles of the rocker arms - the figure shows the Galant engine with a volume of 2.0 l
3. Loosen the rocker arm set bolts by turning them one-fourth of a turn each time until the spring pressure is completely relieved (4.3). Take out the bolts. If you are working on a DOHC engine, remove the camshafts.
4. Remove the rocker arms and rocker shafts from the cylinder head. If the engine has hydraulic valve adjusters, try to make sure that they do not fly off the rocker arms. Wrap the ends of the rocker arms with pieces of duct tape to secure the adjusters in place.
Examination
4.5 Rocker arms and rocker axles
1. Left rocker axle (longer than the right axle); 2. The right axis of the rocker arms; 3. Front cover; 4. The arrow points towards the crankshaft pulley; 5. Rocker arms; 6. Intake valve rocker; 7. Spring - free length 53.3 mm; 8. Cover N2; 9. Cover N3; 10. Cover N4; 11. Corrugated washer; 12. back cover
5. In order to disassemble and check the rocker arms, unscrew the mounting bolts, remove the rocker arms and springs from the axles (4.5).
4.6 Inspect the mating surfaces and the tips of the adjusting screws (indicated by arrows)
6. Thoroughly clean the parts and inspect them for wear and damage. On SOHC engines, check the surfaces of the rocker arms that are in contact with the camshaft and the tips of the adjusting screws (4.6). Replace any damaged or worn parts. Make sure the oil holes in the rocker shafts are not clogged.
Installation
4.7 Unscrew the adjusting screws so that their tips protrude 1 mm
7. Loosen the locknuts of the rocker arm adjustment screws and unscrew the screws (4.7) until their ends protrude 1 mm.
8. Lubricate all parts with special grease or engine oil and assemble the rocker shafts (SOHC engines). When you install rocker arms, axles and springs, consider their markings and the difference between the left and right parts. In 8-valve engines, the slots at the ends of the axles must be directed upwards. On 16 valve Galant engines, mount the axles so that the slots point outward. Insert mounting bolts (16 valve) or install covers (8 valve), to pin the details.
9. Insert the hydraulic adjusters into the rocker arms and wrap the ends of the rocker arms with duct tape to secure the adjusters.
10. Install the assembled axles and rocker arms on the cylinder head, insert the mounting bolts and tighten the bolts with your fingers. Check the markings on the caps. Remove the insulating tape from the rocker arms.
11. Tighten the bolts in several steps to the correct torque.
12. Adjust valve clearances with adjusting screws (engine cold)
13. Temporarily replace the valve cover, start the engine and warm it up.
14. Re-adjust the valve clearances with the engine warm
15. Install the remaining parts in reverse order of removal.
16. Start the engine and check for leaks.
