Accumulator battery
Removing
1. Disconnect both cables from the battery, starting with the negative cable.
2. Disconnect the clamp.
3. Lift up the battery. Please note that the battery is heavy.
4. Having taken out the battery, inspect the tray, check for corrosion.
5. When replacing the battery, make sure that the parameters of the new battery (dimensions, capacitance and recoil current) exactly the same as the replacement.
Installation
6. The battery is installed in reverse order.
Power cables
Examination
1. Periodically check the cables along the entire length, damage, cracking or burning of the cable insulation, as well as corrosion are not allowed. A poor battery connection can cause engine start failures and engine performance degradation.
2. Check the condition of the connections of the poles with the terminals, the presence of corrosion, cracks and loosening of the wires. The presence of white flaky deposits under the insulation at the terminal point indicates corrosion of the cable conductors and the need to replace it. Check the presence of corrosion and deformation on the terminals and the condition of the fastening bolts.
3. When removing cables, always disconnect the battery from ground first, and connect to ground at the very last moment, in order to avoid shorting the battery poles with the tool that tightens the terminals. If only the positive pole cable needs to be replaced, first disconnect the cable from the negative pole (cable removal procedure is detailed in Chapter 1).
Replacement
4. Disconnect the old cables from the battery, track the laying of the cables along their length and find the places where they are attached to the starter and to the ground, disconnect the cables from the starter and ground traction relay. Remember the route along which the cable is laid in order to lay a new cable in place of the former one.
5. If the cables will be replaced with new ones, when purchasing new cables, take the old ones with you. It is extremely important that the new cables exactly match the old ones. The positive pole cable is easy to distinguish from the negative cable, - the positive pole cable insulation is usually red, these cables have a larger cross section, the battery terminal has a large diameter. The earth cable insulation is black, the cross-section and terminal diameter are smaller than those of the battery positive cable.
6. Clear threads of fastening of cables of the battery on the traction relay of a starter and on a body, remove traces of corrosion.
Memo
To protect against corrosion, coat the threads with petroleum jelly or a special protective compound for battery terminals.
7. Attach a cable to the traction relay of a starter or to weight, reliably tighten nuts and bolts of fastening.
8. Before attaching a new cable to the battery, make sure the cable is long enough to install without tension.
9. First connect the cable to the positive pole of the battery, then to the negative.
